A big part of our business has been print media advertising. The problem with running ads in the paper, or in our case, post card mailers, has been our unavailability to answer the calls.

In order to increase sales and to accept payments online, we needed a merchant account. We originally started out with "CardServices International", (CSI). However, we were paying 2.29% plus 20 cents a transaction for "Point of Sale" sales where we actually "Swiped" our customer's credit card through our terminal (which we paid $800.00 for). If we manually entered the credit card information into our terminal, our rate went up to 3.10% plus 30 cents a transaction.
Since most of our sales came via telephone (our 800 number), we had to manually enter the credit card information. That meant for every hundred dollars we processed manually, we paid CardServices International $3.40.
When we wanted to accept credit card payments online, CSI told us that we had to purchase the software for $500, plus a set up and programming fee of $299. Then, we would have to pay a "Gateway" fee of $35 every month. They gave a minimum monthly usage of $35. We would have to meet this in order to get the 3.10% rate. If we didn't, we would have had to pay $25 plus any transactions would be charged 3.90%.
Then we found Electronic Clearing House. (ECHO) They've been around since 1986 and online since 1995. They provide the merchant accounts for most of the casinos in Las Vegas and they have the best rates we have found anywhere.
We use ECHO and we now pay 2.29% plus 30 cents for our Internet transactions. The set up fee was only $99 and there is NO Gateway fee, plus they throw in a FREE virtual terminal to manually enter credit cards.
They also provide the software to accept and process checks online, by phone or by fax, absolutely FREE of charge. This software doesn't print out the check to be deposited, it processes it electronically and in real-time.
